Suluk Kawarna

Suluk Kawarna

$550.00

This work from the Tapangeli Residency is divided into two media on a wall measuring 26 meters by 8 meters, with the following puzzle piece on canvas sized 100 x 100 cm. Suluk Kawarna is a piece inspired by the way of life of the santri—those who walk the path as salik, devoted spiritual pilgrims who diligently follow the footsteps of deep contemplation toward the essence of being. This work not only tells the story of an individual’s journey toward enlightenment but also serves as a contemplative space connecting distinctive elements from the Muria region: the santri, cultural heritage, and kretek. In the context of Muria, santri are not merely religious students; they are also guardians of social values and creators of new culture. Their heritage is expressed not only in written scriptures but also through daily practices, including the kretek culture—a distinctive Nusantara product rich with its own symbols and meanings. In this work, kretek is an important element—not just as a physical object but as a symbol of life and reflection: smoking it is like taking a deep breath that connects the inner self with the universe.
