Interview with Petrus Yopa Adiel

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I was born and raised in Yogyakarta, a city known for its rich artistic culture. Growing up in this atmosphere has influenced me in both the short and long term. The artistic environment has shaped my career, with most of my growth coming from the people in this city.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
My father, Joseph Wiyono, had a major influence on my painting style. I developed my art with inspiration from Gustav Klimt, Van Gogh, and Sandro Botticelli, focusing on the nobility of human identity, especially women, and how humans react to dynamic life situations.
How do you define success as an artist?
Success for me is when my artwork connects with the audience, creating a dialogue that allows them to form their own messages and philosophies. It’s beautiful when my work can inspire wisdom and beauty in others. Additionally, being able to live comfortably from the income my art generates is also a great success.
How do you develop your art skills?
I develop my skills by observing and exploring real-life and virtual environments. Everything I see is a fresh source of inspiration, and I express these ideas through paper media.
Describe your dream project.
My dream project would be to showcase my artwork in exhibitions across several countries, even in small venues like cafes, restaurants, or hotels. I would also love to collaborate with the tourism sector more extensively.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
My latest inspiration revolves around exploring the dynamic between human identity, especially women's roles, and how individuals react to life's ever-changing circumstances.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
My artwork often focuses on the nobility of human identity, particularly how women perceive and navigate life. I want my work to evoke deep reflection on life, identity, and the environment.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
I’m always open to collaborations, especially with other artists who work in different mediums or with new technologies. I’m particularly interested in collaborating within the tourism sector and creating site-specific art installations.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
I face challenges by constantly observing, learning, and exploring new techniques. Every challenge becomes an opportunity to refine my approach and improve my work.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
"A beautiful body perishes, but a work of art dies not." — Leonardo da Vinci. This quote resonates with me because it highlights the timelessness of art and its ability to outlive the physical form.
