Ngiring Kairing

Ngiring Kairing depicts a group of people moving in the same direction, as if they are following something ahead of them. This movement represents how people receive and follow things that come from their surroundings and from previous generations. “Ngiring” means “to follow,” while “kairing” is my interpretation of being carried along. I relate this idea to the way traditions, memories, values, stories, and cultural knowledge are passed from one generation to another. What we inherit is not always preserved in exactly the same form. As time changes, what we receive can be adapted and given new meaning. Through Ngiring Kairing, I reflect on how we receive something from the past, carry it into the present, and eventually pass it on in a form that may have changed.
