Memento Dare, Whale Fall
In Memento Dare (remember to give); Whale Fall, I explore giving as a legacy that continues beyond our visible presence. Whales are magnificent sea creatures with the wisdom that I believe they carry for ages. This work is about the whale fall: a whale’s final descent that becomes the offerings for other lives. This transformation speaks to my belief that what we offer can outlast us.
I depict the whale swimming, its body gracefully dissolving into the surrounding space. Through charcoal, I move between dense darkness and fragility, fading marks, holding strength and vulnerability within the same form. The negative space around it allows this quiet disappearance to unfold.
The whale becomes a reflection on how we live, what we carry, and what we give to the cycle of life. Its immense body turns into an offering, suggesting that even as our presence changes, our capacity to sustain others may remain.
Memento Dare; Whale Fall is a reminder to give—to let the life we have lived become part of life beyond ourselves.
Anna Hardjadinata
I have always loved drawing and painting, but I only decided to follow my passion in 2019. I learned to draw and paint by myself and also took some online and on-site courses. Charcoal drawing became my main medium when I started using it in 2023, when I joined my first exhibition through an open call for the Skala Mini Art Exhibition at Grey Art Gallery Bandung.
