Idol

M. Medik’s work “IDOL” reflects on the social phenomenon of who and what we consider an idol. Instead of a human figure or celebrity, he chooses a pink fish, visualized symbolically through a blend of soft aquarelle technique and contemporary sungging lines. The pink color brings a sense of pop, fantasy, and artificiality, portraying idols as images often detached from reality.

The fish—agile yet vulnerable to being swept away by currents—becomes a metaphor for humans trapped in social expectations and self-image. In a silent composition without a stage or crowd, the pink fish appears as the still center of worship, holding an underlying tension. Through this work, Medik invites us to question the meaning of an idol: is it rooted in true values, or merely in appearances?

Influenced by my mother’s drawings, the romanticism of Raden Saleh, and the freedom of Jackson Pollock, I create art that bridges tradition and moderni...
