Wahyuartnes

1999

Wahyu Simbrana is a realist and naturalist artist based in Karangasem, Bali, who recently graduated from the Institute of Arts Indonesia (ISI), Denpasar. Long time ago, he was belittled by his art teacher in junior high school, saying that his skull painting wasn't a piece of art. The incident motivated Wahyu to keep enhancing his artistic abilities and to go beyond his limits. His paintings center on many things such as death and life. He's a huge fan of Salvador Dali, a well-known surrealist artist For example, in one of Wahyu's paintings titled "Memory of Dali", he included Dali as the main object of the painting and two other objects, a watch and a giraffe, which refer to Dali's famous masterpieces "The Melting Watch (1954) and ""The Burning Giraffe" (1937)."

Interview with Wahyuartnes

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
Hi, my name’s I Gede Wahyu Simbrana. I’m from Karangasem, Primsari Strait. My hobby is painting.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
My paintings talk about many things. I want to be balanced when it comes to painting. The techniques, concepts, messages—they’re all intertwined.
How do you define success as an artist?
The reason I decided to join LucyDream Gallery is because it aims to be impactful socially. As an artist, I think it’s important to be socially active as part of a contribution to society.
How do you develop your art skills?
I began my journey as an artist when I was young. It started when I was in elementary school, and I’ve kept learning about art—the meaning of it.
Describe your dream project.
My dream project is to have a solo exhibition where I can fully express my artistic vision.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
The creation of my art involves an expression in the depiction of imagination or illusions that arise from my subconscious realm, recorded from suggestive forms or metaphysical shapes.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
I use the realist naturalist technique. My paintings seek to impart deeper meanings about life through forms, body gestures, facial expressions, and depth.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
I have the tendency to explore new things, and when I’m stuck, I often watch movies, play games, or attend events with friends for inspiration.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
Sometimes, I abandon the painting I work on when I hit a dead-end, leading me to explore new ideas and create new paintings.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
In my opinion, art means refreshing my soul. Doing art is like seeking out my identity.
