Interview with Riki B Suteja

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I am from the city of Bandung, where the development of fine arts is quite strong and dynamic due to the presence of art schools. This has greatly influenced my artistic thinking, as the references and competitions here are quite dynamic.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
One of my biggest artistic influences is a painter named Radhinal Indra. His sensitivity to art and design elements, as well as his approach to media exploration, has greatly influenced my own tendencies toward exploration.
How do you define success as an artist?
I believe everyone has their own definition of success in their artistic career. For me, success is a continuous journey. The first stage is creating a work with full effort, intention, and thought. The next stage is when that work is recognized and appreciated by others.
How do you develop your art skills?
I develop my work through exploration, particularly with the materials I use. I constantly seek new alternatives to express my ideas and concepts visually.
Describe your dream project.
My dream project is to create a site-specific artwork that raises awareness among viewers about themes such as the process of human self-development.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
The main inspiration for my latest work is the use of resin, not just as an aesthetic element, but as a painting medium.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
Like in my previous works, the main theme is human personality development and its interaction with reality. It explores how people psychologically adapt to circumstances, creating personalities that are constantly shifting.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
My creative process is explorative and intuitive, focused on letting go of expectations and embracing what happens on the canvas. I often use techniques from Automatic Surrealism.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
There are many challenges, such as art block. In those moments, I take a short break and make lots of sketches to restart my creative flow.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
One of my favorite quotes is from a sculptor from Bandung, Gabriel Aries: “Striving for balance has led me to a new appreciation of unfamiliar beauty.”
