Interview with Oöol Fjölkunnigr

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I am from Canada. Living in a log cabin in a wild natural environment for many years, as well as being influenced by native art and crafts and the sparse sub-arctic landscapes, has greatly affected my work. Growing up in the 60s and 70s, I was also influenced by the hippie psychedelic creative scene and the depth of Asian philosophies and religions such as Hinduism, Zen, and Tibetan Buddhism.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
My biggest artistic influences include Salvador Dali, Miro, Leger, Paul Klee, Paul Gauguin, Jack Kirby, Frank Frazetta, Jon Jones, and Cal Schenkel.
How do you define success as an artist?
Success as an artist means wholehearted dedication to living your art and bringing into the medium whatever your muse inspires you to do, regardless of external factors or the sometimes trite opinions of others.
How do you develop your art skills?
I develop my art skills by drawing figures, faces, landscapes, animals, and things in my mind's eye. The more time I spend at it, the better I become. I utilize contour drawing, expressionistic scribbling, automatic writing, careful detailed strokes, and a Dadaist approach in any available medium.
Describe your dream project.
My dream project might be to make my characters come to life through advanced AI animation, showcasing sophisticated movement and storylines.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
My latest artwork is a small acrylic painting that serves as a sentimental memory, reflecting my six months in India as a wandering sadhu. It features two small Gypsy girl beggars who befriended me and guided me to their favorite natural wonders, with my beloved cat Pema weaving around their feet.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
I hope viewers experience the taste of wonder that surrounds us if we are attuned to it.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
My creative process involves various techniques, including contour drawing and expressionistic styles, while I explore the correct intensity of colors.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
The COVID-19 pandemic gave me a lot of time to refine my technique and develop the patience to complete works down to the last detail. I aim to learn more about anatomy and the play of light and shadow.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
Don Van Vliet: frown land... "My smile is stuck I cannot go back to your Frownland My spirit's made up of the ocean And the sky 'n' the sun 'n' the moon 'N' all my eyes can see I cannot go back to your land of gloom Where black jagged shadows Remind me of the coming of your doom I want my own land... Take my hand and come with me It's not too late for you An' it's not too late for me. From the album "trout mask replica"
