Dimas Prayogo

2000

I’m Dimas Prayogo, or Bogang, from Gresik. My art focuses on raising awareness of coastal communities, influenced by Raden Saleh and Jonas Burgert. Growing up surrounded by artists in my family, I’ve always had a passion for painting. Though self-taught, I was mentored by a local artist after a missed opportunity at ISI Yogyakarta, leading to my first exhibition in 2020. I primarily use charcoal and acrylic, with a focus on fishermen's lives in my recent work. My goal is to share my art globally, staying consistent despite challenges. I live by the quote: “To work and be an artist, one needs love. The person who seeks sentiment in their work must first feel it themselves”.

Interview with Dimas Prayogo

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I am Dimas Prayogo, born in Gresik, and I am usually called Bogang. The influence of my work is to make people aware of the lives of coastal communities and to provide lessons and insights.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
Raden Saleh and Jonas Burgert.
How do you define success as an artist?
Since I was a child, I have loved drawing and painting. My father and grandfather were both artists, and their craft was passed down to me, especially from my father. From that, I became certain that I would become an artist, whether successful or not—that is my destiny.
How do you develop your art skills?
I am self-taught. I once applied and was accepted to ISI Yogyakarta in 2018, but unfortunately, my mother didn’t allow it. Then, by chance, I met and got to know a local artist from Gresik. I told him about my experience of failing to enter ISI Yogyakarta due to my parents' objection. He mentored me for two years and invited me to exhibit with him at GRESART in 2020 at Icon Mall Gresik. Since then, I have started my journey as an active painter.
Describe your dream project.
I want to introduce my work to the world.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
My latest work depicts the lives of fishermen and their current conditions.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
Yes, I hope it serves as a lesson for people who are unfamiliar with the lives of coastal communities.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
My medium is charcoal and acrylic. I do have specific techniques and media that I use.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
I use whatever is available and remain consistent in my work.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
“To work and be an artist, one needs love. At least, the person who seeks sentiment in their work must first feel it themselves and live with their heart.”
