Raping A Pop Culture
The background to creating this painting stems from my passion for Batman. I like live-action Batman films to the point of trying to find exciting ideas from the fictional world of Batman that can be applied in the real world, especially regarding ideas about life principles, inner struggles and philosophy. But then I realized that I did not live in the city of Ghotam; I lived in a village surrounded by rice fields in Karanganyar Regency. Here, it finally occurred to me that Batman is a pop-culture icon who was created to (intentionally or not) make the audience sink into fantasy. For that reason, I still need to criticize Batman in my mind. Ultimately, I intend to express this critical statement through this work: “Batman, you may enter my thinking spaces. But don’t protest if I position you only as my entertaining clown.”
