Wedha Abdul Rasyid
Wedha Abdul Rasyid (born March 10, 1951) is an Indonesian graphic artist. He is known as the creator of the WPAP (Wedha's Pop Art Portrait) or FMB (Foto Marak Berkotak) style. For his contributions, he is often referred to as the father of Indonesian illustration. He has been working as an illustrator since the 1970s. Starting in 1977, when he joined Hai magazine, he created numerous illustrations, especially for the fictional works of Arswendo Atmowiloto and Hilman Hariwijaya. One of his notable projects was illustrating the popular fiction series Lupus.
Wedha introduced a new method of creating facial illustrations. This innovation was prompted by his declining eyesight as he reached the age of 40, making it challenging to draw faces in a realistic and detailed manner. He began experimenting with a cubist-inspired style for his illustrations. This approach grew in popularity and became recognized as part of the pop art movement, remaining influential to this day. This style of illustration is called Wedha’s Pop Art Portrait (WPAP), and some even refer to it as the Wedhaism movement.
