Interview with Walid Syarthowi

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I come from Jakarta, a metropolitan city that is the center of industry in Indonesia. Growing up in a Betawi cultural environment that highly values diversity and tradition, I have had the pleasure of meeting many people. This experience taught me the importance of behaving in society. Additionally, my cultural background provides a unique perspective in understanding and solving problems, especially in contexts that involve creative elements.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
One of my biggest artistic influences is Piet Mondrian. His geometric works inspired me to think using basic shapes and explore my imagination more freely. Observing landscapes and the shapes and colors in his works encouraged me to develop a unique and personal style in each of my pieces. Piet Mondrian also taught me the importance of observing the environment and using basic shapes as ideas for my work.
How do you define success as an artist?
For me, success as an artist is measured by the ability to express oneself authentically and create work that impacts and inspires others. Additionally, success lies in the ability to continue developing and experimenting with new ideas while receiving appreciation from the art community.
How do you develop your art skills?
I develop my art skills through constant practice, learning from other artists, attending workshops, and seeking inspiration from various sources such as nature, literature, and culture. I also try to share my experience and expertise with children with special needs and students.
Describe your dream project.
My dream project is to create a large-scale art installation that combines visual elements, sound, and audience interaction. The installation will explore themes such as identity, space, and the relationship between humans and technology.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
The main inspiration behind my latest artworks is domestic and environmental issues related to social change and natural phenomena. I want to capture the complexity of feelings and thoughts that arise from these experiences.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
Yes, the main theme in my artwork is the relationship between humans and their surroundings. I want to convey a message about the importance of understanding ourselves and how we interact with the world around us.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
My creative process begins by observing my surroundings and then creating a composition with geometric shapes. There is no specific media that I use.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
I overcome challenges by continuously observing art developments at both the national and international levels.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
Learn from nature and believe that color gives power to our emotions.
