Interview with Teguh Ritma Iman

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
My name’s Teguh Ritma Iman. I’m usually called Pak Iman. I’m an artist. I believe everything comes from the Creator. I was given a profession as an artist. The world is vast in this beautiful land, which inspires me to express it on media such as canvas or paper.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
My father was a painter. Growing up, I would watch my father paint, and sometimes I took part in drawing and doodling. His painting style has been stuck in the back of my mind until now.
How do you define success as an artist?
I don’t really have any big dreams, though my dad was an artist. I will keep painting and not feel satisfied. I make my anxiousness into paintings. I try not to be complacent.
How do you develop your art skills?
All the paintings I’ve created over the years are the products of my knowledge from the Arts Institute of Indonesia (ISI), Yogyakarta. As a college student, I was trained to be extremely good, though I had an art background from watching my dad paint.
Describe your dream project.
I don’t have a specific dream project in mind, but I believe in continuously developing my art.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
I am very interested in and inspired by life and the surrounding nature, particularly the lives of fishermen and their various activities and support systems.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
I want to convey the beauty of life and the importance of appreciating our surroundings, particularly through the lens of the lives of fishermen and their families.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
My creative process often starts with inspiration that comes instantly. I sketch on paper or an iPad and then pour that rough sketch onto the canvas, refining it as I go. I primarily use acrylic paint.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
I overcome challenges by continuing to commit to my practice and setting aside dedicated time for my work.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
“Art is a gift from God. Stay passionate about art.”
