Interview with Rusdan Ef

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I come from Banyuwangi and am currently studying at ISI Surakarta.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
My artistic influences are not limited to one person but come from many artists, serving as both learning resources and references. I am also positively influenced by the spirit of my close friends, who are also artists.
How do you define success as an artist?
Your work is recognized by many people. It becomes a source of learning and inspiration for others. The message of your work is understood and appreciated. You have a loyal fan base, and your work is collected by others.
How do you develop your art skills?
I continuously create work and experiment with techniques and themes from time to time.
Describe your dream project.
My dream project involves creating paintings for state palaces, participating in overseas residencies, and establishing my own brand and gallery.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
The main inspiration for my current work is based on my regret over not following the rules at an Islamic boarding school. This regret serves as a lesson for others not to repeat my mistakes, as disregarding rules leads to long-term regrets and losses—not only in a school setting but in all areas of life where rules and norms exist to be respected and followed.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
I want to remind viewers not to take time, orders, rules, and norms for granted. As human beings with common sense, we can discern right from wrong, helping us avoid regretful choices since time never returns.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
My creative process begins with experiencing, observing, and selecting certain things to transform into a painting. I typically use traditional painting media with impressionist techniques.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
I overcome challenges by consistently creating new work and seeking innovative approaches aligned with current and future artistic trends.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
As a student at an Islamic boarding school, I hold onto a quote from my late teacher/kyai during a religious study session: "Students can become anything, as long as they are pious in their respective fields." This quote has changed my perspective, motivating me to stay passionate about becoming a useful artist.
