Interview with Rozaana Afifah

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
My name is Rozaana Afifah, and I am from Trenggalek, East Java. Art in my region is just beginning to develop, and I hope it continues to grow well.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
The biggest influence on my artistic journey is, of course, my parents. Without their support, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to create the works I do today.
How do you define success as an artist?
As an artist, success is achieved when one can continuously grow in their creative process, experiment with new things without losing their unique style, reach the art market, and be recognized by a wide audience.
How do you develop your art skills?
Creative thinking helps in solving problems and completing tasks. Moreover, being involved in the art world teaches patience, as achieving optimal results often requires a long process. To keep improving my skills, I continuously try new things, whether it’s different tools, materials, or mediums. This is intended to gain new experiences and avoid being stuck in a comfort zone, which can bore the audience.
Describe your dream project.
With high-quality work, I would gain the confidence to showcase it publicly. I hope to help develop the art scene in my region alongside local artists, engage the youth to care more about art, and organize local exhibitions or participate in exhibitions outside the area.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
My latest works are inspired primarily by my pet cat. The cat is the only animal I truly like, and it has become the central theme of my recent creations.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
With this concept, I aim to tell stories about cats, hoping to encourage society to care more about other living beings, especially in the context of the increasing cases of animal exploitation.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
I mainly use acrylic paint on canvas, but I also experiment with other mediums like oil pastels, colored pencils, or markers for detailing. My style leans towards illustration, which helps me visualize my imagination. In the future, I’d like to explore more diverse media and materials.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
In the creative process, challenges are inevitable, but they should be handled calmly. Acting impulsively can ruin the entire artwork and affect the artist’s mood, turning the piece into a failure.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
One of my favorite artists is Vincent van Gogh, and one of his quotes I admire is: "Art is the unexpected beauty found everywhere."
