Rizky Romansyah

2002

I am an artist from Surabaya, inspired by Javanese tradition, history, and culture. My style blends influences from Greg Craola and Dulk with my own unique expression, focusing on transformation and resilience. Specializing in acrylic on canvas, my work often explores themes of courage and overcoming challenges, drawing from folklore and personal experiences like the Quarter Life Crisis. For me, success is inspiring others through art, evoking emotion and growth. As Jerzy Kosinski said, “The principles of true art are not to portray but to evoke.”

Interview with Rizky Romansyah

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I am from Surabaya, a multi-ethnic city, one of which is Javanese. Therefore, the artworks I create are often inspired by concepts or visuals that reflect Javanese tradition, history, and culture.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
Visually, my works are influenced by artists Greg Craola and Dulk, particularly in the aspects of deformation, distortion, and transformation. However, I develop these influences further with my own unique visual style.
How do you define success as an artist?
I define success as an artist when I can inspire or influence many people to become better individuals through my works.
How do you develop your art skills?
I started developing my creative skills as a child by doodling on books and walls with pencils and crayons. In junior high school, I experimented with wet techniques using acrylic paint on canvas. During my time studying at ISI Surakarta, I honed my skills by deeply understanding the fundamentals of fine art and experimenting with media beyond paper and canvas. To this day, I continue to refine my artistic abilities.
Describe your dream project.
My dream project, in the near future, is to hold a solo exhibition.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
The main inspiration behind my latest artwork is the anxiety of a young person fearing the future—fearing not being able to make their parents happy, fearing that all their efforts will be in vain, and fearing becoming a failure in the future. This can be described as the Quarter Life Crisis phase, which almost every young adult experiences. Visually, I am inspired by the Klono figure, a character from the folklore of Ponorogo, which represents courage and resilience in facing challenges. The Klono figure symbolizes brave youth, while the Punakawan figure represents the idea that we are not alone.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
The special message I want to convey is for myself and everyone who relates to it: keep fighting no matter what happens and prove that we can get through this uncertain phase. We must believe that "God didn't bring us this far just for failure."
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
My creative process begins with a specific anxiety or inspiration. From there, I study both non-visual and visual concepts before translating the idea into the chosen medium. The medium I commonly use is acrylic on canvas.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
The main challenge I face in creating art is my mood. I usually overcome this by listening to music or attending exhibitions, which help reignite my motivation to create.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
"The principles of true art are not to portray but to evoke." - Jerzy Kosinski
