Interview with Ijal Mariachi

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I am originally from Probolinggo, East Java, but I was born and raised in Bali. My Balinese upbringing plays a significant role in shaping my art, allowing me to draw inspiration from the island’s vibrant culture and diverse artistic influences.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
Throughout my career, I’ve been inspired by many artists, but my work is particularly influenced by surrealism and pop art. These styles allow me to explore bright colors and surreal female figures, a recurring theme in my pieces.
How do you define success as an artist?
For me, success isn't about whether my paintings sell, but about expressing myself fully and connecting with my audience. Of course, it’s satisfying when my work is appreciated or purchased, but the ultimate measure of success is the impact my artwork has on others.
How do you develop your art skills?
Over the years, I’ve developed my skills by experimenting with patterns, colors, and themes. I’ve learned to rely on my mood and expression, which allows my work to remain spontaneous and personal.
Describe your dream project.
One of my dream projects is to create large-scale murals, possibly on skyscrapers or public walls. This would give me the opportunity to reach a broader audience and leave a lasting impression in public spaces.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
My most recent works continue to explore the themes of surrealism and pop art, with a focus on pattern, color, and female figures. These elements reflect my desire to create artwork that is instantly recognizable and uniquely mine.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
I want my paintings to challenge perceptions of race and gender, using surrealism and pop art to address these themes in unconventional ways. The pink-skinned figures I create are meant to bypass typical notions of ethnicity, creating a more universal character.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
My creative process is quite spontaneous. I rely heavily on my mood and feelings when I paint, which makes each piece a reflection of my state of mind at the time. I use bright colors and recurring surreal figures, particularly female characters with pink skin, as my primary medium of expression.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
When I feel stuck or uninspired, I take a break. Sometimes I hang out with friends, go for coffee, or ride my motorbike to clear my head. Camping and spending time with my kids also help me reset and find new inspiration.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
One of my favorite quotes is, "Intelligence without ambition is a bird without wings." It reminds me that having the passion and drive to create is what allows me to take flight as an artist.
