My name is Riyan and I’m an artist from Lamongan, East Java, inspired by local culture, folklore, and nature. Kent Williams is a major influence on my work, shaping my emotive, figurative style. Success for me is creating art that connects emotionally and evolves creatively. I develop my skills through practice, new techniques, and inspiration from everyday life. My dream project is an exhibition combining painting, installation, and interactive tech focused on nostalgia and local culture. My latest work reflects on the impact of hedonism in society. I use oil painting, mixed media, and digital elements in my process. One of my favorite quotes is by Kent Williams: “Each painting is a discovery, an exploration.”

Interview with Riyan Harmadhan Putra

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I am from Lamongan, East Java. The culture and environment where I grew up have greatly influenced my artworks. I often find inspiration in local wisdom, folklore, and the natural beauty around me, which I then visualize in my art.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
My biggest artistic influence is Kent Williams, an American artist whom I admire. His unique style, combining figurative art with emotional expression and intense colors, has inspired me in creating my artworks. His techniques and visual narratives help me understand how a piece can convey deep stories.
How do you define success as an artist?
I define success as an artist when my artworks can convey emotions, stories, or messages that others can feel and understand. Success also means continuously growing creatively, producing authentic works, and building connections with the audience, whether through their appreciation or through dialogue about art. Additionally, success can be measured by how my work has a positive impact, both personally and within the art community.
How do you develop your art skills?
I develop my art skills through regular practice, exploring new techniques, learning from artists I admire, and attending art discussions or workshops. Moreover, I often find inspiration from everyday life and other works of art.
Describe your dream project.
My dream project is a large art exhibition that combines painting, installation, and interactive technology. This exhibition would focus on the themes of nostalgia and local culture, creating an immersive experience for visitors where they not only see but also participate in the stories presented through the art.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
The main inspiration behind my latest artwork is the phenomenon of hedonism in society. I explore how a lifestyle focused on material pleasure and consumption affects social values and the emotional balance of individuals. This piece aims to provoke reflection on its impact in our everyday lives.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
The main theme I want to convey is a reflection on the impact of hedonism in society. Through my work, I hope to invite the audience to reflect on how the pursuit of pleasure and material satisfaction affects human relationships, values, and the balance of life. My message is the importance of finding meaning beyond material things and maintaining harmony in social life.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
My creative process starts with exploring the ideas and themes I want to highlight, often through research and observations around me. After that, I create initial sketches to design the composition. In creating the artwork, I use various techniques, including oil painting and mixed media. I also enjoy experimenting with texture and color to add depth to my work. Additionally, I often combine digital elements to enrich my visual narrative.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
I overcome challenges in creating art by taking time to reflect and clear my mind. If I experience a creative block, I often seek inspiration from new sources, such as the works of other artists. Additionally, discussing with fellow artists helps me gain new perspectives and solutions to the problems I face.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
As an artist, one of my favorite quotes is: "Each painting is a discovery, an exploration. It’s a response to the world around me and the world within." – Kent Williams. This quote reminds me that art is a journey to understand oneself and the world, with each piece being a new step in that exploration.
