Rilona Murwiki

1999

My name is Lona and I am a self-taught photographer and painter. I bought my first camera, learned to paint at the age of 20, and began traveling around Indonesia on my motorcycle. Following my eye for beauty, I’ve explored Bali, Flores, Lombok, and many more breathtaking places. During my travels, I discovered three main muses: the beauty of landscapes, textures, and the human figure. My artistic process is a blend of intention, intuition, and feeling. The true subjects of my photos and paintings are often unclear, as I aim to capture the union of humans and nature. In my gallery, you’ll find beauty captured in its most refined form: natural light, simple lines, minimal editing, a love for black-and-white photography, and a wide range of subjects from nature to humans. With my paintings, I primarily focus on the human figure. I am deeply passionate about the beauty our Earth has to offer. I use my motorcycle skills and travels to illuminate the magnificence and power of nature.

Interview with Rilona Murwiki

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I am Rilona Murwiki, born and raised in Bali. For me, living in Bali serves as a source of inspiration and influences my artworks, both visually and emotionally. The beauty of nature and the relationship between humans and their surroundings often become the main subjects in my work.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
My biggest artistic influences were my father, Awiki, and other renowned old painters like Nicolai Fechin and Rudolf Bonnet.
How do you define success as an artist?
By continuously creating, developing, and growing in the world of creativity.
How do you develop your art skills?
Simply by practicing—sketching or painting every day for at least 4 hours.
Describe your dream project.
My dream project is to paint and photograph (fine art prints) the beauty of nature and the relationship between humans and the Indonesian archipelago.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
My inspiration comes from various sources—personal experiences, emotions, and the surrounding environment. As I delve deeper into painting, I love exploring nature while painting or photographing and interacting with locals to capture the atmosphere, emotions, and expressions for my artwork.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
True simplicity—how happiness doesn't always come from material things but from moments, human interactions, and connections with nature.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
To create a piece, I usually start with live painting to get a feel for the object I’m drawing, followed by photographing the object so I can continue working on it in the studio. The mediums I often use are canvas or watercolor paper with oil paints and oil pastels.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
By maintaining consistency in creating art and taking breaks to engage in activities related to nature.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
"A simple life is not a small life." - Morgan Harper Nichols
