Rifqi Soenandar

2004

My name’s Rifqi Soenandar and I am from Banjarnegara, Central Java, and currently reside in Sleman, Yogyakarta, where the local art scene inspires my work. My artistic journey began with a local artist in Wonosobo, learning about figures like Affandi and Basquiat. My best piece, "Luas Ruang," reflects my surroundings and marked my first exhibition. Critics describe my work as unique and vibrant. My latest pieces convey personal experiences and insights from my environment. I aim to collaborate with other artists and connect with diverse audiences through exhibitions. My creative process is fueled by personal concerns, and I believe galleries play a vital role in showcasing art and attracting new viewers.

Interview with Rifqi Soenandar

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I am from Banjarnegara, Central Java, and now I live in Sleman, Yogyakarta. The influence of art in Jogja encourages me to develop more in my creative process. The environment and the people around me serve as inspiration for my creations.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
From the beginning, I learned to paint from one of the artists in the Wonosobo area. Through him, I became acquainted with many great artists, including Affandi and Basquiat.
How do you define success as an artist?
Success, in my opinion, is when your work can be remembered by many people, even after you have died. This is important because it means you have left behind a meaningful impression for others to remember.
How do you develop your art skills?
When I was in vocational school, I studied with Mr. Andi, one of the artists in the Wonosobo area. Now that I'm in Jogja, I am self-taught, learning by observing other people's works in galleries and on social media.
Describe your dream project.
My dream project is to keep working because, on this path, I will always find new dreams—higher and higher.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
My own new thoughts and the new environment I encounter serve as my inspiration.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
Almost all of my work comes from myself or my environment. I want to convey messages that I feel and that others feel, but from my point of view.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
Before I start working, I need to address my own worries or problems, as well as those of my environment, because that is what makes my work come alive.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
I approach my work as I approach life, continuing to create as long as I am alive.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
“Wong Urip iku mung dropped by ngumbe” (Living people just drink), a quote from Javanese culture.
