Reynold Roger

2003

My name is Reynold Roger, I am an emerging artist from Bandung, inspired by my mother, who encouraged me to express myself through art from a young age. I define success as the satisfaction I feel with my work, using each piece to convey positivity. My dream project is a solo exhibition showcasing my artistic journey. My best work, created with oil pastels, earned me a place at ISI Denpasar. While I haven't collaborated with other artists yet, I hope to find unique partnerships in the future. I aim to express the theme “Be YOU till FULL” in my art and seek meaningful interactions with my audience. I view art galleries as vital for expanding my reach and building my brand.

Interview with Reynold Roger

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I am from Bandung, and I believe that art in Bandung is very developed and has its own uniqueness. For me, it presents a significant opportunity for my career as a semi-corporate art student, as I want to use my interests and talents as an artist while also navigating the corporate world.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
My biggest artistic influence is my mother. Although she does not have an artistic background, she taught me to express everything through pictures from a young age. She also encouraged me to use various colors in my outfits, which led me to enjoy dressing eccentrically when I engage in activities.
How do you define success as an artist?
For me, success as an artist is feeling satisfied with my own artwork. Sometimes, I experience artist block, which hinders my creativity. When I finally feel satisfied, that’s the moment I can breathe life into my work. I see my creations as empty glasses that I fill with things I love, and I strive to give positive affirmations to everything I do.
How do you develop your art skills?
I diligently create sketches that I include in my journal, attend art exhibitions to enhance and motivate my skills, follow unique artists, and explore new ideas to combine with the knowledge I already have.
Describe your dream project.
I would love to have a solo art exhibition showcasing my work from childhood to my current career, telling the story of my transformation.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
My main inspiration for my latest work is "the process I went through." In the past, I often admired others' work and felt insecure about trying it myself. Now, I realize that I can create similar work in my own style.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
For now, I want to express the theme "Be YOU till FULL."
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
I always experiment with different media when creating works because I believe each medium has its own unique way of expression.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
I stay consistent and work on improving my personal branding. A strong personal brand can lead to many opportunities.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
"What a good day to be proud of all the progress I've made."
