Rasika Hanif

2004

I’m Rasika Hanif, an artist from Losari Village, Purbalingga. Inspired by the serene hills and vibrant nature of my hometown, my art reflects personal experiences and the meaning in everyday moments. Starting with a school drawing club, I pursued art at ISI Yogyakarta, overcoming limited resources with determination. Working mainly with acrylics on canvas, I experiment with textures and storytelling. I dream of collaborating with brands to bring my art to new mediums, guided by a favorite quote from FSTVLST: "Live the path as best as you can, even if it doesn’t go as planned."

Interview with Rasika Hanif

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I come from Purbalingga, specifically from Losari Village. Being a villager is something I am deeply grateful for. The rows of hills, beautiful nature, fresh air, and lush trees and plants are a source of tranquility as well as inspiration. The natural beauty and environment of my hometown greatly influence the creation of my paintings. My artworks are often inspired by personal experiences, simple moments, and the desire to capture memories. Moreover, my paintings frequently blend the imagination of a dream world with reality. All of these elements are poured into my work as a form of reflection, contemplation, the search for meaning, and a reference to the life I live.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
Some of the artists who have significantly influenced me are Hannah Flanagan, Wastana Haikal, and Selynn Lee. Instagram has been a valuable platform for finding inspiration and exploring their works, as well as those of other artists.
How do you define success as an artist?
For me, success as an artist means creating works that are honest, free, and genuinely represent my voice, feelings, and thoughts as a human. Additionally, success is when my art has a meaningful impact on both myself and others.
How do you develop your art skills?
I first became interested in art during middle school when I joined an extracurricular drawing club despite having no prior skills. Over time, drawing became a hobby that I refined through high school. To further develop my skills, I pursued art studies at ISI Yogyakarta. Coming from a family and environment unfamiliar with art, I faced challenges such as limited access to art supplies, networks, and exhibition spaces. This motivated me to choose Yogyakarta as a place to advance my artistic abilities.
Describe your dream project.
My dream project is to collaborate with a brand, allowing my art to be applied to other mediums beyond canvas. I aspire to be both a painter and an illustrator.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
The main inspiration for my artwork comes from myself, rooted in personal experiences. Beyond that, my environment, books, and music also play a significant role in sparking creativity.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
Through my art, I aim to convey that small moments in life often hold profound meaning. When we view them with an open heart, even simple things can become deeply significant.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
I primarily use acrylic paint on canvas for my work. Currently, I am learning to explore techniques. Sometimes, I create textures using a mix of gesso and acrylic paint before starting to paint.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
I often face challenges such as art blocks. To overcome them, I take breaks or engage in other activities to distance myself from the canvas, such as listening to music or pursuing other hobbies.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
One of my favorite quotes is from the lyrics of the song Gas! by FSTVLST: "Walking a path that doesn’t go as planned is a road often traveled. The only way forward is to live it as best as you can."
