Interview with Surya D. Putra

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I come from Bali, precisely from Sukawati Gianyar, but was born and domiciled in the city of Denpasar. Since a young age, I have had a blend of atmosphere and outlook on life with urban culture, traditional culture, and also the development of modern technology.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
Salvador Dali, Henry Matisse, I Gusti Nyoman Lempad, and Jean M. Basquiat.
How do you define success as an artist?
Success as an artist for me is when we have a sense of unity and satisfaction with the work created. The satisfaction of each artist is different; for me, that satisfaction is being free to express oneself and when everyone can enjoy and have that sense of freedom.
How do you develop your art skills?
My development in the world of art is inseparable from the help and direction of friends in the art community. Starting from a hobby and interest in Fine Arts, I did the process of learning and practicing autodidactically.
Describe your dream project.
My dream is to have an exhibition of works in international galleries and to collaborate with international artists. Additionally, I aspire to form a creative studio as a container for productive art, especially fine art, to be enjoyed by all groups.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
Anytime, depending on my feelings; actually, my ideas and many references always come in the midnight.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
Surrealism, modern, and contemporary art.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
I use a blend of traditional and modern techniques, emphasizing the importance of expression and creativity in my art.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
I face challenges by seeking support from my peers and remaining open to learning and growth.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
“Art has no rules and creators don't separate it from their work, because they are their work.”
