Nurina Susanti

1994

I’m an artist from Magetan, East Java, a small town known for its natural beauty and cultural richness. Growing up, I was drawn to visual art and longed to see exhibitions in my hometown, though opportunities were rare. After graduating, I joined a local artist community and witnessed the art scene in Magetan begin to flourish.

My works are often inspired by personal memories, especially from childhood, as well as by everyday moments and reflections. I work primarily with graphic art techniques like woodcut and linocut, but I also enjoy drawing with markers and acrylics. I’m deeply inspired by artists such as AC Andre Tanama, Ariswan Adhitama, and Agugn, whose styles have shaped my creative journey. For me, art is about growth and impact—creating consistently, connecting with people, and offering inspiration through each piece.

Interview with Nurina Susanti

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I’m from Magetan, East Java — a small town well-known for its Sarangan Lake tourism. Since I was in school, I’ve always been fascinated by art exhibitions and hoped to attend one in my hometown. However, at the time, it was still a rare occurrence. It wasn’t until after I graduated that I began to experience exhibitions here. I also joined a local artist community in Magetan after graduating, during a time when the art scene here started to grow. If I were to reflect on how much my hometown influences my work, I would say it plays a significant role. I grew up here, and many of my works draw on childhood memories. However, my passion for exhibitions also exposed me to outside references and influences, which have greatly enriched my creative process.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
I admire the works of AC Andre Tanama, especially his character Gwen Silent, the art of Ariswan Adhitama with his use of hardboard cut and hand coloring techniques, and Agugn’s unique panel-based works. Their graphic art styles have been a major source of inspiration for me.
How do you define success as an artist?
For me, success means being able to continuously create and make a positive impact on others. It means helping people through my art, having my work recognized by a wider audience, and being able to genuinely inspire others.
How do you develop your art skills?
I continuously sharpen my skills by creating regularly, experimenting with the techniques I enjoy, and gradually finding a point where I feel I’m becoming better—step by step—than I was before.
Describe your dream project.
I’ve always dreamed of publishing a book that includes both my writings and illustrations. I also hope to hold a solo exhibition in the future.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
My latest piece, Dancing with my Favorite, is inspired by things closest to my daily life—specifically, food and drink. I imagined that these items could produce music, and I illustrated that idea in black and white using drawing techniques.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
I often take inspiration from personal themes—things closest to me, like life experiences, childhood moments, or personal discoveries that I’m reflecting on.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
I often use relief printing techniques such as woodcut or linocut, which are part of graphic arts. I find these techniques very special, though they come with their own challenges and surprises in every print. In addition to that, I also enjoy drawing using markers or acrylics.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
I try to stay calm when facing challenges. Of course, there are times when I feel panic or stress, but I do my best to push those feelings aside. I usually start by writing in my journal as a way to reflect. From there, I analyze the source of the problem and try to find a solution. Every creative process inevitably comes with challenges—but I also see them as exciting moments worth solving.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
“Creativity gives hope that there can be a worthwhile idea.” — Edward de Bono
