Novantri Sumahadi Putra

1978

My name is Novantri Sumahadi Putra, and I was born in Surabaya. I began my artistic journey as a self-taught artist at the Minat Studio of Malang State University, where I also founded the "Kentjing Andjing" art group. My work is influenced by pop culture, particularly the vibrant cartoon-like characters of the 1990s, and artists like Keith Haring, whose bold and impactful visuals inspire me.

To me, success as an artist is about authenticity—creating works that reflect my true self and resonate with others. I constantly explore new techniques, themes, and media, pushing myself to grow and evolve. My recent works center on "Connecting Monster," a concept celebrating individuality and fostering collaboration between unique talents.

Art is my way of interpreting the world and connecting with others. I believe in starting with a blank canvas—full of possibilities—and letting creativity flourish.

Interview with Novantri Sumahadi Putra

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I was born in Surabaya and later studied art independently at the Minat Studio of Malang State University. I also founded the art group "Kentjing Andjing." This is where the influence of my figurative painting style developed, alongside the incorporation of pop culture. The vibrant cartoon/naive characters that emerged in the 1990s greatly shaped my artistic direction.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
I am deeply inspired by Keith Haring.
How do you define success as an artist?
I believe the success of an artist is when they can interpret their visual expression as an authentic representation of themselves, creating subjectivity in their visuals that garners significant appreciation from the art world.
How do you develop your art skills?
By staying sensitive and exploring various techniques or media while engaging with diverse themes and fields.
Describe your dream project.
My current dream project is an art exhibition that explores toy art as a medium to reveal the urban potential within a city's history.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
My recent works are inspired by imaginative figurative characters.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
Each piece I create carries its own theme. Globally, my work seeks to interpret "Connecting Monster": a visual narrative born from the imagination of a fantasy world, giving rise to unique characters. These characters form a story of connection—"Connecting Monster" in the context of "Connecting People." Here, "Monster" does not represent a scary fictional creature but instead symbolizes individuals with uniqueness, strengths, or extraordinary talents. Connecting Monster represents the process of linking such unique individuals with others who share the same interests, needs, or goals. It’s akin to "connecting the dots," fostering collaboration, mutual support, and growth.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
In my creative process, I still use conventional media for painting.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
I always strive to remain true to myself while exploring more diverse themes or media.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
"Start with a blank canvas, not an empty stomach." A blank canvas can be filled with vibrant colors and brilliant ideas, while an empty stomach only fills the mind with fear of hunger and despair.
