Shodik

2001

My name is Muhammad Shodiq. I was born and raised in a community that depends on tobacco for its life. In the creative process, I place myself more as part of society. To dig deeper about tobacco, I have explored a lot in various media, painting, performance, installation, and music. I often add tobacco as a visual material in my paintings.

Interview with Shodik

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I come from Probolinggo, East Java. Probolinggo didn’t offer many opportunities to develop my artistic activities, so I moved to Yogyakarta. In Yogyakarta, I found a “big laboratory” where I could explore and create freely using various mediums and gain new knowledge. Growing up in a tobacco farming environment in Probolinggo heavily influenced my work. The sights and experiences from this upbringing, especially the tobacco industry and commodities, have become central topics in my art.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
My influences come from the objects around me and my memories, especially the visual cues from places like scrap yards. I’m often inspired by things like corrosion, mold, textures, and piles of color on discarded plastics, which give me interesting ideas for my work.
How do you define success as an artist?
Success for me is inspiring people and creating work that benefits all living things on earth.
How do you develop your art skills?
I constantly learn by visiting studios, talking to other artists, attending and visiting exhibitions, reading books, and being involved in art collectives. I also make it a daily habit to sketch something outside the studio as a way to process my feelings, techniques, and ideas.
Describe your dream project.
My dream project is to have a solo exhibition where I can fully express my artistic vision.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
The main inspiration comes from my personal experiences, the environment around me, and the cultural and industrial aspects of life in Probolinggo and Yogyakarta.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
Many of my works reflect on the tobacco industry and its cultural and economic impact, as well as deeper personal and societal themes.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
My process involves taking inspiration from objects, textures, and scenes around me. I frequently use found materials and embrace the natural effects of corrosion, decay, and wear to create textured, layered works.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
I overcome challenges by continuously learning, experimenting with new mediums, and staying connected to my inspirations from the environment and my life experiences.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
My favorite quote is from Joseph Beuys: "The ego must be developed not for its own sake, but because it is needed by society. If you are only interested in self-realization then you cannot make good paintings. To do this, you have to think about formation and about how the idea of formation comes from history."
