Interview with Iqrete
Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
"I'm from Jakarta. I spent most of my life in this city. Since childhood, I’ve grown up and studied here, which has shaped my mindset and the way of life I’ve chosen. It’s a city that is Jakarta-centric but more relaxed. This has fostered my interest in urban and popular culture, though not with the hectic nature of larger cities."
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
"Przemek Blejzyk, also known as @sainer__."
How do you define success as an artist?
"For me, success is having work that impacts many levels of society, inspires others, provides financial stability, and allows me to save for the future."
How do you develop your art skills?
"I am constantly gathering more information and experience to use as concepts for my works. I’m also exploring the visual composition techniques I use."
Describe your dream project.
"My dream project would be a solo exhibition abroad or a collaboration with my favorite musicians."
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
"It was about not having the courage to express love for my mother."
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
"My works often contain simple criticisms of life, focusing on the essentials: appreciating what’s there and maximizing what you’re given."
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
"I have two main approaches: neat, detailed work with strong lines alongside spontaneity. For example, I might add detailed work to the main object while 'ruining' other parts using intuition. This often results in textured layers in my work, color blocking with a palette knife, rough brush strokes, or even attaching torn pieces of paper from notes or receipts."
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
"I start with light tasks, like sketching, tidying up my workspace, looking for inspiration, or distracting myself with small activities."
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
“There is nothing more truly artistic than to love people” from Vincent van Gogh. “Art wasn’t supposed to look nice; it was supposed to make you feel something” from Rainbow Rowell. And my favorite quote is from Keanu Reeves “I don’t want to be part of a world where being kind is a weakness."
