Adi Sumarjaya

2000

I Made Adi Sumarjaya is a realist painter from Batuan Village Sukawati, Gianyar, Bali. His paintings revolved around the Balinese culture and his surroundings. In one of his paintings from the series of ""Perjalanan Diri""/One's Journey, he depicts a Balinese vendor selling souvenirs along Kuta Beach. Here, he tries to tell the audience that a souvenir vendor is one of the livelihoods which is common in Bali. Through this interpretation and depiction of rich Balinese culture, Adi aims to illustrate the meaning of realism through the form of two-dimensional paintings. To him, art is like a real-life reality that has a process to create a piece of art.

Interview with Adi Sumarjaya

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I’m I Made Adi Sumarjaya Putro, known as Adi, from Batuan Village, Sukawati, Gianyar, Bali. Growing up surrounded by artistic people—my father is a tabuh artist and my uncle is a traditional Balinese painter—deeply influenced my interest in art.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
My artistic influence comes from my family and community, particularly the traditional Balinese art forms I was exposed to growing up.
How do you define success as an artist?
Success for me is having my artworks introduced to a wider audience, both nationally and internationally, and being able to hold exhibitions, especially solo ones.
How do you develop your art skills?
I want to build upon the traditional Batuan style, incorporating new techniques I’ve learned in art school. The constant exploration of different techniques helps me grow as an artist.
Describe your dream project.
My dream project is to hold a communal exhibition and eventually a solo exhibition. My ultimate goal is to have my work recognized internationally and hold exhibitions around the world.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
My latest works are inspired by a desire to express my imagination and creativity, breaking away from the confines of everyday reality.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
I aim to convey that art is a real-life reality that goes through a creative process. It’s a platform for expressing creative ideas that connect with others emotionally.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
Inspiration comes unexpectedly, making it both exciting and challenging to capture. I use a variety of techniques, influenced by traditional Balinese painting, but I enjoy adding my own creative experiments.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
When I face creative blocks or boredom, I step away from painting and engage in other activities like playing an instrument, fishing, or working out. This helps me reset and return to my art with fresh ideas.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
For me, "Art is a platform to express creative ideas and experiments" is a guiding principle that keeps me motivated to explore and create.
