Interview with Lim Tong Xin

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I am from Selangor, Malaysia. The distance between my city and where I work is significant, which takes up a lot of my time and energy during the commute.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
Keith Haring is one of the artist who can inspire me.
How do you define success as an artist?
Success is trying new things, stepping out of your comfort zone, challenging yourself with new experiences, and drawing inspiration from them. Don’t remain stagnant; keep your time full and stay active.
How do you develop your art skills?
I practice every day and frequently visit art galleries, not only to learn techniques but also to understand the expressions in different paintings.
Describe your dream project.
By the time I turn 30, I hope to have a reputation in my art career, regular collectors, and earn top honors in painting competitions. Eventually, I want to open my own gallery and exhibit globally.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
The hibiscus flower and the spirit of unity in the Malaysian nation.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
My work mainly explores the subconscious, using abstract forms and vibrant color combinations to create a fantasy world.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
First, I look for inspiration, research related topics, and filter the information. I mainly use acrylics, black ink, tactile sand, and plastic to enrich the overall effect and interest of my work by blending multiple media.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
I approach my work more systematically now. If mistakes happen during the process, I adapt and treat them as unexpected opportunities for beauty. I’ve learned not to get frustrated with my work or myself. Mood and focus are key when creating.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
"Don't limit yourself, beat yourself."
