Kiti Muliadewi

2004

I am Kiti Muliadewi, a novice artist from Ubud, Bali. I work more in a semi-realist, decorative painting style. I grew up watching her father paint, which inspired her to start doodling. I studied art at SMK Seni Rupa and am now pursuing a degree at ISI Denpasar. My artistic style differs from my grandfather's traditional black-and-white and my father's colorful classic works. My paintings are more modern and cheerful. I had showcased my artwork "Puan and Jenga" in 2022, blending oil paint and pastels to express themes like love and tranquility.

Interview with Kiti Muliadewi

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I am from Pengosekan, Ubud, a traditional village where many residents are engaged in fine arts, particularly traditional painting. This environment deeply inspires and supports my development as an artist, motivating me to create with enthusiasm.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
My biggest artistic influence is my family, who have always been involved in fine arts, especially traditional painting. Their work deeply motivates me to follow in their footsteps and continue the legacy.
How do you define success as an artist?
For me, success is when my work is recognized by many people and when viewers can feel the emotions I’ve poured into each piece. Additionally, it’s about being able to fully support my life through my art.
How do you develop your art skills?
I develop my skills through continuous practice, maintaining enthusiasm, accepting criticism and suggestions from others, and sharing experiences with senior artists.
Describe your dream project.
My dream project is to have my own studio where I can create works that are fully my own. I also plan to open a handicraft shop to showcase and sell my creations.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
My feelings and emotions guide my creative process. I express them through the characters’ expressions or eyes in my work and through the colors I use. Each color carries a unique meaning that reflects the mood of the piece.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
I aim to convey deep emotions and sensitivity through my art. I want people to feel the emotions I’ve experienced and reflected in my work.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
I don’t have a specific time of day for creating; I paint based on my emotions and express them through characters and color. One notable technique I’ve learned is Caravaggio’s grisaille technique in oil painting.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
I overcome challenges by maintaining enthusiasm and drawing inspiration from my surroundings, including my family and the artistic community in Ubud. Continuous practice also helps me push through difficulties.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
"I want to touch people with my art. I want them to say, 'He felt deeply, he felt softly.'" – Vincent Van Gogh.
