1977

Kasiyanto, an abstract artist hailing from Malang, East Java and currently based in Ubud, has been deeply influenced by his interactions with various artists in Bali and other cities between 1997 and 1998. During this period, he immersed himself in the traditional art scene, visiting museums like Museum Arma and studying painting catalogs to refine his understanding of composition. In 1999, he embarked on a personal artistic journey, adopting a style characterized by childlike lines akin to a form of reformation.

Interview with Kasyanto

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I am from Malang City and currently live in Batu, Malang. This has significantly influenced my artistic process. Malang, known for its cool climate and being an education hub in East Java, provides a rich environment for artistic growth. With two art campuses—UNBRAW and UNM—we often interact, discuss, and exhibit together, allowing us to learn from one another and grow in the world of fine arts.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
Picasso, Heri Dono, and Edie Hara.
How do you define success as an artist?
Success, for me, is when an artist can create from within and contribute meaningfully to the wider community through their art.
How do you develop your art skills?
I develop my skills through regular and intense practice, aiming to improve with each period of my artistic journey.
Describe your dream project.
My dream is to exhibit my art around the world.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
Pop art and contemporary art have been the driving inspirations behind my recent works.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
My best work comes from moments of total dedication and creation from within. It's when people view my work with a sense of satisfaction and amazement that I feel most fulfilled.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
I thrive in a quiet environment, surrounded by a rural atmosphere, which helps me focus and create.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
By always striving for progress and continually learning, I overcome creative obstacles.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
“Always progress and never stop learning in art.”
