Jung Wah

2004

My name is IGN.A. Putra Wahyu Sedana, but I’m better known as Jung Wah. I was born and live in North Denpasar, Bali. Currently, I’m an active student at ISI Denpasar, class of 2022. I’m also part of an art group specializing in Prasi or Lontar art called Ang Ah Prasi. My work has been appreciated and reviewed by curators, as well as the Rector of ISI Denpasar, Prof. Dr. I Wayan "Kun" Adnyana, S.Sn, M.Sn. For me, exploring techniques and mediums is a vital part of my artistic journey. My creations range from installations, paintings, and Prasi to multimedia sculptures. What sets my work apart is my authentic style, which incorporates Aksara Rerajahan and mythology as both visual elements and a reflection of my personal uniqueness.

Interview with Jung Wah

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I am from North Denpasar, Peguyangan, Bali. My artworks adopt a global thematic approach, primarily focusing on tradition and Balinese script literature. This influence is evident in my creations, as I aim to highlight tradition and its spiritual essence through visual representations like "rerajahan" (sacred drawings).
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
My greatest artistic influence is I Wayan Apel Hendrawan. I have adopted his techniques and style, further developing them to create my own unique works.
How do you define success as an artist?
Success as an artist is not measured by competitions but by the knowledge an artist possesses and shares with younger artists. True success lies in having skills that benefit others in meaningful ways.
How do you develop your art skills?
I continuously explore various possibilities, whether thematically or technically, to develop my skills in creating art.
Describe your dream project.
My dream project is to create profoundly impactful works within the context of "contemporary art." I want to continue producing spiritually and traditionally energized pieces. The pinnacle of my dream is a solo exhibition featuring highly refined works.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
The main inspiration for my 2025 works is the ancient relics of Bali, such as classic reliefs and statues. These serve as the foundation for my creations, with the addition of "rerajahan" accents to imbue the visuals with soul.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
The primary message in my artwork is to remind people not to forget the artistic and cultural heritage passed down through generations. Our ancestors excelled in developing and creating diverse arts rich in metaphor and meaning.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
My creative process and techniques are always evolving with time. By learning and continuously exploring, I strive to identify and address any shortcomings in my work, leading to ongoing artistic innovation.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
Challenges in art creation often stem from expectations, which I see as mere shadows of the final result. However, the expressionism within the creative process leads the way, allowing the work to naturally define its conclusion.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
My favorite quote is: "Be the best of the best until you can become something good, and strive to be better than before."
