Gede Jaya Putra

1988

My name’s I Gede Jaya Putra, and I’m called Dekde. I’m a Seminyak-based artist. I graduated from the Institute of Arts Indonesia (ISI), Denpasar. Studying at ISI was the reason I wanted to dedicate myself to art. Although I’m not from an artistic family, my curiosity about art grew long ago. My grandfather used to be a handyman at temples. He would carve a lot. Perhaps his creative DNA passed on to me. I am interested in creating installation artwork. For my final assignment at ISI, he bought a Mercedes and wrecked it intentionally to make an installation. What's more, he loves exploring art using other mediums.

Interview with Gede Jaya Putra

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I am from Seminyak. While it’s not the most conducive place for an art career due to its distance from an artistic environment, it presents interesting challenges that fuel my creativity.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
My artistic journey began with a focus on realism, influenced by Mr. Chusin and the Taxu Bali group. Today, I explore more experimental approaches to artistic presence.
How do you define success as an artist?
For me, success is a constant state of restlessness, as it pushes me to keep creating.
How do you develop your art skills?
By constantly pushing myself to the limit and draining everything out of me during the creative process.
Describe your dream project.
A residency in the Netherlands to study the historical archives of Indonesia, particularly Bali, and connect them with the concept of Balinese “Yadnya.”
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
My latest work explores the concept of Yadnya, which serves as both an aesthetic rule and a method of creation.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
My work delves into personal and cultural issues, focusing on the balance between tradition and contemporary life.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
My process is usually accompanied by coffee, snacks, music, and the sound of rain, creating a tranquil atmosphere for my ideas to flow.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
By maintaining a relentless drive to push my boundaries and find inspiration in personal and cultural challenges.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
One of my favorite quotes is by Salvador Dali: “Intelligence without ambition is a bird without wings.”
