Interview with Helmi Fuadi

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I was born in Banyuwangi, East Java, and currently live and work in Yogyakarta. My current city is rich in art and culture, which continually pushes me to explore and actively participate in various artistic and cultural activities.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
I admire the work of Mark Bradford.
How do you define success as an artist?
In my opinion, success as an artist is when you're no longer afraid to create, regardless of the limitations of materials or media. Ideas and desires always arise, but they are often hindered by time, production costs, and other factors.
How do you develop your art skills?
I’ve had the opportunity to participate in a residency program, collaborate with friends in the performing arts like dance and theater, and take part in art exhibitions. These experiences have been crucial for my creative development.
Describe your dream project.
I think having the opportunity to hold a solo exhibition is a dream project for every artist.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
For my latest artwork, I was inspired by posters and papers stuck on city walls, with their peeling textures, colors, and scribbles. I find it intriguing to transform this visual "waste" into something meaningful and enjoyable.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
I often focus on themes related to daily life or human psychology, such as personal experiences and emotions. I also explore the past, childhood memories, and how the past shapes the present and future.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
My creative process usually starts with a concept or a concern I want to address. I then explore visual forms like color compositions, textures, and text, which is now a central element in my work. I use collage techniques with various types of paper, such as magazines, newspapers, and posters, layering and tearing them repeatedly. This process is a form of catharsis for me, a way of releasing stored emotions.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
I overcome challenges by not limiting myself creatively and by using media that can be reused or repurposed.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
"Art is a way to make the invisible visible."
