Geofanny Tambunan

1988

Geofanny Tambunan is an Indonesian artist originally from Jakarta, now based in Bali, where he found the inspiration he lacked in his hometown. Influenced by Salvador Dali and James Jean, he blends Surrealism and Pop Art in his work. Creating art as an emotional outlet, he defines success by effectively communicating stories through exhibitions and major art fairs. His journey in art has been therapeutic, aiding his recovery from depression. His best-known piece, Melankolia, reflects his feelings of solitude. He resonates with the quote, "Cogito Ergo Sum" ("I think, therefore I am") by René Descartes.

Interview with Geofanny Tambunan

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I am from Jakarta, but it never inspired or influenced my work, which is why I moved to Bali.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
Salvador Dali and James Jean have greatly influenced my artistic approach.
How do you define success as an artist?
I feel successful when I convey my message and story through my work to a wide audience, whether in solo exhibitions or major art fairs like Art Basel or the Biennale.
How do you develop your art skills?
By learning technical skills through practice, studying art history, and sharing experiences with other artists.
Describe your dream project.
A residency in another country, such as Japan or Italy, to explore new inspirations and techniques.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
My emotions drive my creative process, and I create when I am feeling deeply, no matter the emotion.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
My work often reflects personal experiences, especially feelings of loneliness and mental healing.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
I create when I feel an emotion strongly, allowing it to dictate the flow of my work. My creative process is flexible and not bound by time.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
I stay true to my emotions and trust the creative process to overcome any obstacles.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
"Cogito Ergo Sum" (I think, therefore I am) by René Descartes.
