Interview with Jesmoon
Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I’m Jesmoon, from Gianyar, Abianbase, Tedung area. I come from a family with no artistic background, and my parents were confused about where I got my interest in art. The environment around me contrasts with my current pursuits, as most people here are involved in big tourism businesses. This motivates me to create my own path without following the norms of my surroundings.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
For local Indonesian artists, I am greatly influenced by Popomangun and Darbotz. They come from different backgrounds—one is a gallery artist and the other is a street artist—but both highlight things that are close to them, which resonates with my personality.
How do you define success as an artist?
To me, success as an artist means being able to work without worrying about materials like spray paint, brushes, acrylics, or canvases. When all the supplies are available, and you can simply focus on creating, that's success.
How do you develop your art skills?
I develop my skills by watching, listening, and taking action. I often observe how other artists work, what materials they use, and I listen to art-related podcasts, whether they're about street artists or gallery artists. The key is responding to what I’ve learned, because simply watching and listening is not enough without putting those insights into practice.
Describe your dream project.
My dream project is to travel the world and create art in every country I visit.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
My work generally revolves around an alter ego, or my "other self." There’s a "monster" within each of us that we cannot show to everyone, whether it’s anger, ego, sadness, or other feelings. I depict this as a colorful monster because monsters are fictional creatures with no true form, which allows me to create my own representation.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
Yes, I often explore themes of identity and the hidden aspects of our personalities through the portrayal of colorful monsters.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
My ideal work environment is a clean and well-organized space. As a graphic designer, I tend to be a bit of a perfectionist, so neatness helps me work better.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
When faced with challenges, I focus on the joy of creating and remind myself that whether my work sells or not is a bonus. If I think about sales too early and things don’t sell, it might affect my passion.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
"Control what you can control, because suffering makes you stronger. Create your own path!
