Interview with Emil Rale

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
My name is Emil Subarkah Asyari, also known as EMILRALE. I am 32 years old and from South Tangerang, a suburban city adjacent to Jakarta. Since childhood, I have been deeply interested in visual arts. In 2004, this interest led me to street art, where I started writing graffiti around my neighborhood. Graffiti introduced me to many things and connected me with a wide variety of people.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
The artistic activities I engage in are influenced by music and album covers, such as Linkin Park's collaboration with Jay-Z, Hybrid Theory, and Meteora. I’m also inspired by Japanese anime like Dragon Ball Z and Gundam. Additionally, I admire artists like Jim Lee, Mark Riddick, Mr. Totem2, and The Killer Gerbil.
How do you define success as an artist?
To me, success as an artist means living off your art and making a living from it, while having the freedom to express your thoughts and secure your finances through your creativity.
How do you develop your art skills?
I developed my skills through both academic learning and social experiences. I use art as a multifunctional medium to address social issues in my environment, which I then translate into visual works that are presented to a wider audience.
Describe your dream project.
My dream project is to paint graffiti across Europe and Asia, spreading my work around the world.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
My recent work has been inspired by books on revolution and biographies of influential figures, both national and international, such as Tan Malaka, Bung Karno, and Che Guevara.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
My artistic style is influenced by street art, especially in character development and line work. However, this year I’ve been exploring abstract art and pop surrealism, blending them with my foundation in street art.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
I capture ideas by traveling and experiencing new environments. I document these experiences through photos and videos, which I then reference when sketching my artwork.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
I view challenges as part of my creative process, constantly pushing myself to find new ideas through travel and documentation.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
“My work is my inner child; for me, art is the breath of life.”
