Eka Sutha

1997

My name’s Eka Sutha and I’m from Karangasem, Bali. I grew up in a household which was highly influenced by the Balinese socio-culture-religion tradition. When I was a child, my family used to practice the Balinese custom and showed me the way of living. Art and ceremonies were important things in my family. I didn’t realize I was naturally influenced by my family in a good way, of course. I mainly uses the collage pattern to combine objects, characters, and styles in his paintings. I am immensely inspired by the Western and local artists such as Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Heri Dono. In my paintings, I am interested in delivering what he sees, experiences, and remembers in everyday life.

Interview with Eka Sutha

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I’m from Karangasem, Bali, Selat Village. Growing up in a Balinese socio-cultural environment and being surrounded by traditional arts shaped my artistic journey. My family has always been involved in arts, from literature to traditional theater.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
My biggest influences include Basquiat, Andy Warhol, and Indonesian artists like Heri Dono, Ugo Untoro, and Eko Nugroho. They inspire the narrative and visual ideas in my work, but much of my influence comes from daily life and Balinese traditions.
How do you define success as an artist?
Success, for me, is not about resting—it’s about continuous creation. If I stop, I feel like I've failed. Success is being consistent and true to my artistic voice, allowing me to share my vision with the world.
How do you develop your art skills?
I have trained myself as an artist for many years, starting from a young age when I loved drawing. I later entered a vocational school majoring in art and then pursued a degree in Visual Communication Design (Graphic Design).
Describe your dream project.
One of my dreams is to have a street art exhibition and travel the world with my drawings. I also want to visualize my masterpiece in a unique style during my own exhibition.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
My latest work reflects my passion for depicting female characters in traditional clothing, aiming to show women from multiple perspectives.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
I’m interested in depicting the expressions and gestures of characters, highlighting Balinese culture with vibrant colors.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
My creative process involves drawing on my iPad and experimenting with colors. I find satisfaction in expressing my thoughts and emotions through my art.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
When I feel bored or stuck, I take breaks, ride my bike, and engage in simple activities to refresh my mind and find inspiration.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
My favorite quote from Andy Warhol is: “There is beauty in art, but not everyone can see it.” I strive to convey the beauty I see in my paintings.
