My name is Dzaky Aziz and I’m from Banyumas, Central Java, where the natural landscape shapes my art, inspiring animal figures and natural themes. Moving to Yogyakarta brought new depth as I explored personal stories of adaptation. Influenced by Hikari Shimoda and James Jean, I aim for a style that’s distinct and recognizable. My dream is to create a monumental piece for global museums. My recent work blends cats and imaginative figures through juxtaposition, exploring contrasts and connections. Despite financial challenges, I continue my craft, believing that, as René Magritte said, “There is no choice: no art without life”.

Interview with Dzaky Aziz
Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I’m from Banyumas, Central Java, where the lush, cool landscapes filled with hills deeply influenced my art. Growing up there led me to include animal figures and natural surroundings in my work. Moving from a rural area to the city of Yogyakarta added to my perspective, shifting my themes to include personal experiences of balancing work, study, and creativity as I adapted to a new environment. These transitions have shaped my artistic process in recent years.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
Hikari Shimoda and James Jean have had the greatest impact on my artistic style.
How do you define success as an artist?
I see success as having a unique style so distinct that audiences can identify my work without seeing my name. When this happens, it shows my art has a recognizable identity.
How do you develop your art skills?
I refine my skills through personal experimentation and by applying knowledge gained from formal art education.
Describe your dream project.
My dream is to create a monumental work with my signature style that becomes part of museum collections, both domestically and internationally.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
My latest pieces are inspired by animals from the cat family, including big cats, and incorporate imaginative personal figures.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
Recent works express personal aesthetic experiences through juxtaposition—placing two elements side-by-side to highlight their similarities or differences.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
I start with observations and reflections on personal or shared experiences, gathering references before I paint. I use conventional techniques like opaque and watercolor styles with acrylic on canvas, followed by final reviews and touch-ups.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
Financial limitations are a primary challenge, so I work as an artist’s assistant to support my artistic practice.
