Interview with Don Bosco Laskar

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I come from Yogyakarta City, a place rich in artistic activities, which greatly influences me as an artist. Living in Yogyakarta has helped me quickly understand art, especially fine art.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
Born as the child of an artist, my father has had a major influence on my artistic sense. Over time, my friends and seniors at school and university also influenced my artistic growth.
How do you define success as an artist?
Success for an artist, in my opinion, is when we create work with sincerity, involve our feelings, and base it on values like honesty, consistency, and good ideas. When these works are executed to the fullest, appreciation from others is a reflection of that success.
How do you develop your art skills?
I developed my artistic skills by expanding my network, experimenting with my work, staying updated on current art trends, and continuously working on the ideas I have.
Describe your dream project.
My immediate dream project is to hold a solo exhibition at an art gallery. Additionally, I want to be influential in fine arts, particularly in teaching children in Yogyakarta and beyond. I also dream of having my own exhibition space someday.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
The main inspiration behind my latest work is positive hope and imaginative thoughts. Visually, it is influenced by senior artists I admire.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
My concept is that art serves as a medium for hope. If we want something, in addition to praying, we also need to act. I believe that what I ask for in faith, I have already received. The main message I want to convey is to stay grateful for what we have and never give up on our dreams.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
In my creative process, I usually start by sketching on an iPad, which I then transfer to a canvas. I use acrylic paint, sometimes adding spray paint for accents. Once the canvas is fully painted, I focus on detailing and balancing the composition, finishing with a gloss varnish.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
I never give up. I constantly explore and experiment, creating new and innovative works.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
"Your power is in your mind, so stay awake. In other words, remember to remember." – Rhonda Byrne (The Secret).
