Interview with Didung Pamungkas

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I’m from Blora, but I currently live in Semarang. It’s challenging to develop artistically here, both in terms of creating work and finding a market, as Semarang is more of an industrial city with a limited artistic environment.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
Pablo Picasso, George Condo, and Francis Bacon. The cubist style inspires my current works, which focus on the body and self in relation to the surrounding environment.
How do you define success as an artist?
For me, success as an artist is when my work is appreciated by the art audience, both critically and financially.
How do you develop your art skills?
I develop my artistic skills by staying productive in creating and by reading.
Describe your dream project.
My dream project is to have a solo exhibition, not only domestically but also internationally.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
My latest artwork is inspired by the interaction between my body and the environment. The body, largely made up of water, adapts to its surroundings, similar to how water takes the shape of its container. Using human figures presented in a deformative, cubist style, I explore how humans adapt to different environments in their everyday lives.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
There is no specific theme or message I aim to convey in each work.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
There isn’t a special technique or medium that I use in my work.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
By staying productive and continuing to read.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
"SOUL KNOCK" by Sudjojono.
