Didik Triyoko

1969

I’m Didik Triyoko, an artist from Malang, now based in Gresik. My journey began in a village rich in crafts like wall paintings and calligraphy, which sparked my passion for art. Inspired by Affandi, Paul Klee, and Yayoi Kusama, I find success in constantly creating and growing. Nature is my greatest muse—animals, plants, and the hills near my home inspire me to highlight environmental preservation in my works. My dream is to hold a third solo exhibition, guided by the belief: “Imagination must be fulfilled.”

Interview with Didik Triyoko

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I am Didik Triyoko, born in Malang and currently living in Gresik (working in a chemical company). The influence on my artworks when I was in Malang came from my village, where there are many small businesses (UMKM) focused on crafts such as wall paintings made from pine wood, calligraphy, landscape paintings, and more.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
Nationally, Mr. Affandi, and internationally, Paul Klee, Joan Miró, Jackson Pollock, and Yayoi Kusama.
How do you define success as an artist?
Success as an artist (painter) means, Alhamdulillah, being able to continue creating with countless ideas and imagination.
How do you develop your art skills?
I develop my painting skills by constantly doodling and sketching every second, every hour, and at all times to keep my fingers flexible. I also actively participate in art events with communities.
Describe your dream project.
My dream project is to hold my third solo exhibition.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
The inspiration behind my latest work is the natural environment around me, including animals, plants, people, and the scenery (such as the hills behind my housing area).
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
The special message in my latest paintings is to encourage us to protect and preserve our natural surroundings (hills, forests).
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
My creative process involves seeing with my eyes, feeling the vibrations with my heart, and then moving my hands to sketch and note ideas on paper.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
The challenges in creating art arise when I lack the mood, free time, or energy to work.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
Favorite quote: Imagination must be fulfilled.
