Defina Sumardji

1990

Defina Sumardji is a self-taught artist and graphic designer who brings passion and personality to every bit of work she touches. She uses art to exercise non-attachment, explore & express her voice, and play with paint. Her work of art has evolved for over a decade, exploring all styles, mediums, and tools she can think of to express her emotions till she found line art and intuitive painting as most helped on her growth and well-being. She believes that creativity is fundamental to human health and well-being, it can be enlightening, invigorating, deeply moving, playful, fun, and cathartic. Through the painting process, she learns to acknowledge that anything that comes up is coming up to be healed.

Interview with Defina Sumardji

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I'm Indonesian, born and raised in Jakarta, and have been moving around since I was 20. Now I live in Bali.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
The first person who inspired me to start drawing was my adopted father. I experienced a lot of emotional triggers from him, but I couldn’t express them verbally, so I found a way to channel my emotions through drawing. In my early days, I gravitated toward dark aesthetics. I also admire Vincent Van Gogh, Francisco Goya, Rothko, Gustave Doré, Margaret Keane, and Gabriel Moreno.
How do you define success as an artist?
I define success as an artist when people recognize and appreciate my artwork.
How do you develop your art skills?
By joining art communities, watching YouTube tutorials, watching movies, reading books, and following other artists on social media.
Describe your dream project.
I would love to create a large-scale line drawing or work on a 3D art project.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
My Distorted Art Series aims to explore human emotions and raise awareness about mental health through line art. Using black and white ink with delicate touches of gold, the series represents the complexities of our inner worlds. The abstract figures reflect entangled thoughts and emotions, with gold accents symbolizing hope, resilience, and beauty amid emotional struggles.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
My work delves into the complexities of the human mind, highlighting the struggles and resilience of those facing mental health challenges. I aim to encourage dialogue, challenge misconceptions, and foster empathy by exploring vulnerability, strength, and healing in my art.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
My process involves deep emotional engagement and hours of work with etchings, pencils, inks, markers, and acrylic paint.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
By pushing forward and staying persistent.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
"Perfection in illusion."
