Cindy IL

I am a digital artist born in Tangerang. And now currently living in Bali. Besides digital art, I explored manual media since 2020. I am a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the intersection between pop surrealism and digital culture. Through painting, photography, and digital media, I aim to create immersive visual experiences that reflect personal journeys, mental health, and the complexities of being human in a constantly shifting world. My artistic process is intuitive and layered. I often draw inspiration from something beautiful and amazed me, and everyday moments of introspection. I combine vibrant colors with symbolic figures to evoke curiosity and emotional resonance. One of my core projects is Cinby, a character I created as an alter ego and emotional guide who explores whimsical yet meaningful landscapes. Cinby allows me to explore inner growth, connection, and the surreal beauty of imagination.

Interview with Cindy IL

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I’m originally from Tangerang and currently living in Bali. Growing up in Tangerang gave me a strong sense of groundedness, while living in Bali has opened up a more spiritual and expressive side of me. The contrast between the busy city and the calming, creative energy of Bali really influences how I create. You can see both structure and fluidity in my work—urban emotions mixed with dreamy, natural elements that I experience every day here.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
There are so many local and international artists I admire, and they all inspire me in different ways. Their works give me motivation and energy to keep creating. I don’t limit myself to one specific influence - sometimes it’s a painting, sometimes it’s a feeling I get from their story, their courage, or their style. All of that becomes fuel for my own journey as an artist.
How do you define success as an artist?
To me, success means freedom—to create honestly and stay true to my own voice. If my art can make someone feel something, or help them feel seen or comforted, that’s a kind of success that’s more meaningful than fame.
How do you develop your art skills?
I’m mostly self-taught. I study a lot through observing other artists, watching YouTube, exploring Pinterest, and simply creating every day—even if it’s just a small sketch. I play with different mediums like acrylic paint, digital tools, and even mixed media textures. I believe that growth comes from experimenting and staying curious.
Describe your dream project.
My dream project is to one day create my own original IP (intellectual property) and turn the characters into collectible toys. I imagine bringing my characters to life—not just on canvas or screen, but as physical figures that people can hold, display, and connect with emotionally. It would be a way to share my imaginative world with others in a more tangible and playful form.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
The inspiration behind my latest artwork is the realization that I have the power to create my own world. Through my art, I can build a universe that reflects my thoughts, feelings, and dreams—where everything is possible, and where my characters can live, grow, and tell their own stories. It’s a reminder that imagination is limitless.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
Yes, a recurring theme in my work is emotional honesty—about identity, loneliness, and invisible connection. I want to say through my art: it’s okay to feel different, broken, or soft. My fantasy worlds are colorful, but inside, they always carry the message that all emotions are valid and worthy of being seen.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
My creative process is very intuitive. I usually start with a feeling, then let it guide the colors, forms, and characters. I mostly use acrylic and oil pastels on canvas because I love the texture and boldness, but I also enjoyed exploring watercolor or any medium. Sometimes I sketch digitally first, but painting by hand helps me connect more deeply with my emotions.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
When I face blocks, I give myself space to breathe. I don’t force productivity when I’m empty. I rest, watch sci-fi movies, listen to music, or simply do nothing. I believe even silence and boredom are part of the process—and part of what makes the next wave of creation feel real.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” – Thomas Merton It reminds me why I make art—because in those quiet, magical moments of creating, I’m discovering who I really am while escaping everything that hurts.
