She began painting at six as a form of expression, which later became her language to communicate her inner world. Her work reflects her journey navigating sensory, mental, and emotional challenges. Inspired by artists like Yayoi Kusama and mermaid legends, Audrey creates vivid, expressive figurative art that challenges conventional beauty standards and conveys personal messages. Her art has inspired others with special needs and has been featured in various exhibitions. Audrey's dream is to hold a solo exhibition.

Interview with Audrey Angesti
Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
Born in Jakarta in 2002, I was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder at two and began painting at six. Initially a pastime, painting became my way of expressing my inner world and navigating sensory and mental challenges, bringing me joy and fulfillment.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
I admire Yayoi Kusama, whose exhibition deeply inspired me, and I’m fascinated by mermaid legends. My vivid, detailed art reflects my neurodivergent perspective, offering a fresh take on traditional themes. I often explore the beauty and mystery of mermaids to express my unique view of the world.
How do you define success as an artist?
For me, success happens when my paintings and their stories make people ask a lot of questions. That is when I know my art has an impact.
How do you develop your art skills?
I just kept painting and painting, visiting different places and exhibitions, watching how others worked, and trying out new things.
Describe your dream project.
My dream is to have a solo exhibition.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
While I struggle to fully express myself through conversation, my paintings speak for me. Focused on self-worth and redefining women’s beauty, my art reflects my experiences, including past bullying. From questioning societal norms, like using cow milk for human babies, to protesting artificial beauty standards, my work offers raw statements from my autistic perspective.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
Mermaid tales hold special significance for me as someone on the autism spectrum. The fantastical nature of mermaids and their solitary existence mirror my own experiences. The themes of exploration and the unknown are especially appealing to me, and the predictability of these stories brings me comfort in a world that often feels unpredictable.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
My best work is The Mermaid Series, started in mid-2022. Inspired by centuries of mermaid tales, I connect with their solitude and mystique, reflecting my own feelings of being different or isolated.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
A cool, spacious, and bright room, with music playing and surrounded by friends.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
"Different, but not less than human."
