Interview with Arief Dhiyaurrahman

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I am from South Tangerang City. The suburban environment and my childhood memories have a strong influence on my work.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
Many animated films have influenced me, and among Indonesian artists, I look up to Nyoman Masriadi, Gatot Indrajati, Ronald Apriyan, and others.
How do you define success as an artist?
Success is when an artist can inspire and influence different aspects of life.
How do you develop your art skills?
My skills developed through formal education, with a primary focus on painting. I also learned from senior artists and shared techniques with friends.
Describe your dream project.
I would love to have a solo exhibition with a romantic theme in a gallery.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
I’ve been reflecting on my life journey, focusing on growing up and becoming an adult, inspired by my experiences with wall climbing.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
Yes, definitely. My work is often a result of self-contemplation, and through it, I aim to share stories that the audience may relate to, with the theme and title serving as indicators.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
I primarily use conventional materials like acrylic paint on canvas. My special techniques include transparency effects and fine brush strokes.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
I need incubation periods to come up with interesting ideas. The purpose behind creating each piece of work also gives me the energy to persist in art.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
“Art can be born from accident. Creative ability in facing difficulties and going beyond limitations will mature the soul of an aspiring artist. The squeeze of social and economic conditions needs to be navigated by artists to reach the meaning of truth.” – Agus Kamal.
