Anindya Asmara

2002

Anindya Asmara Bidhari from Purwokerto faced challenges in connecting with the local art community, which led her to study in Malang, where she found a stronger artistic network. Inspired by Christian Rex van Minnen and Kindah Khalidy, she views success as creating art that remains appreciated despite market changes. Her work blends abstract, decorative, and still-life elements, often exploring memories and emotions. While maintaining a bright color palette, she experiments with various techniques like manual stitching and crafting with materials such as wool and flannel. She dreams of a solo exhibition, values art galleries for expanding her reach, and sees challenges as opportunities for reflection and growth.

Interview with Anindya Asmara

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I’m a student from Purwokerto, now studying art in Malang. In Purwokerto, art networks were scarce, but in Malang, I found many opportunities to learn and grow. My goal is to become a female artist who helps build art networks in Purwokerto.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
Christian Rex van Minnen, Kindah Halidy.
How do you define success as an artist?
Success as an artist, in my opinion, is how an artist manages to remain relevant, and is in demand for his/her visuals, work, and artistic process, even though the art market conditions are changing.
How do you develop your art skills?
Every time I go through the artistic process, there is always something new that I try and incorporate into the visual appearance, whether it is a technique or a new media that I try and use, from there I can weigh up the suitability or things that need to be developed and considered until I am satisfied with the results of my artistic skills.
Describe your dream project.
I want to hold a solo exhibition soon, collaborate with several commercial galleries and create events that provide a platform for young artists to exist.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
I am very inspired by floral lives that display many colors and shapes, making them very suitable for me to combine with the decorative abstract objects that I usually create.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
The themes I take are mostly from memories and emotions that I have experienced, then I package them into a work of art with colorful visuals that feel fresh and fun.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
My creative process often uses abstract and semi-realistic painting techniques, I also always use manual sewing techniques on the abstract doll objects that I make. The media that I use is always not far from crafting/craft media such as yarn, wool yarn, knitting, flannel, beads, etc.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
Provide free, quiet time and contemplative space to evaluate and seek answers to these challenges.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
Every time I go through the artistic process, there is always something new
