Andre Wijaya

1975

I’m an artist from Temanggung, a small town at the foot of Mount Sumbing in Central Java. Nature and rural life deeply shaped my early works, while the social and cultural life around me continues to inspire my art. Over time, my influences evolved from Basuki Abdullah’s realism to the expressive, abstract, surreal, and impressionist styles of artists like Van Gogh, Edvard Munch, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Salvador Dalí, and Edouard Cortes.

I develop my skills through exploration, experimentation, and exchanges with fellow artists. My process begins with observation, followed by sketches and trials of different media and techniques. My latest works are shaped by personal experiences and today’s social-political climate. I always embed messages in my art—through colors, visuals, or symbols. I believe every challenge is a chance to grow, and like Picasso once said, “I begin with an idea, and then it becomes something else.”

Interview with Andre Wijaya

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I come from a small town called Temanggung, located at the foot of Mount Sumbing in Central Java. In the early days of my artistic journey, I was heavily influenced by natural landscapes and rural atmospheres, which eventually shaped my visual work. The local lifestyle and social conditions of the community also serve as sources of inspiration in my creations.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
My early artistic influence was Basuki Abdullah (realism). Over time, I became interested in the styles of Edvard Munch and Van Gogh (expressionism), Jean-Paul Riopelle (abstraction), Salvador Dalí (surrealism), and Edouard Cortes (impressionism).
How do you define success as an artist?
Success as an artist is complex and deeply personal, as there’s no standard measure like in other professions. It could mean having your work recognized and appreciated by fellow artists, curators, collectors, and the general public. Success may also mean being able to continue creating and making a living from your art—through selling works, exhibiting in various places, collaborating with galleries, and more.
How do you develop your art skills?
One way I learn is by not limiting myself to a single method. I interact with other artists who can offer inspiration, motivation, and opportunities to share experiences and knowledge. I also explore and experiment with different media—trying out new techniques, unusual styles, or creating challenging works.
Describe your dream project.
To express myself through solo exhibitions, both in Indonesia and abroad.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
The main inspiration behind my latest work is life experiences and the current socio-political climate.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
Each of my works always contains a particular message or theme, conveyed through color, visuals, or symbols.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
My creative process usually begins with observation—either from my surroundings or via social media. I develop these observations into ideas, starting with sketches that I then execute and refine by trying various techniques and media. The results often become the foundation for future works, as I continuously develop both concept and technique.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
I keep learning and sharpening my skills, adapting to existing conditions, and not being afraid to change styles, switch media, or even alter concepts. I view challenges as opportunities to innovate further in my art.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
“I begin with an idea, and then it becomes something else.” – Pablo Picasso “Hard work is important. If you think hard about something, sometimes you can achieve it.” – Salvador Dalí
