Alexa Genoyer Aguila

1967

As an artist, I am inspired by beauty and harmony in Architecture and Nature, exploring colors. I love faces of the world. I take many pictures and sometimes one inspires me to take my brushes. I think my special pattern is the automatic writing, calligraphy, and the window representations. The use of collage in my paintings came over time. As I get bored easily, I like to explore different ways. But I’m consistent with acrylic even though I like painting on silk, working with my fingers with dry pastels also.

Interview with Alexa Genoyer Aguila

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
My name’s Alexa Sylvie Aguila Genoyer. I was born in Marseille, France, in the late ‘60s. My first drawing was a rose, at the age of 8. My German grandma used to bring me to the Stadt Park and showed me how to look at it. I never decided to become an artist but soon I acknowledged my artistic interests. Growing up, I loved to draw tangible things, animals, plants, and people.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
I admire a wide range of artists, from the romanticism of Manet to pop art, but I don’t have a specific preference. I like to explore art styles freely.
How do you define success as an artist?
Success is about being able to detach from my work, agreeing to sell it, and seeing its value through the eyes of those who don’t know me personally. It’s also about expressing my inner creativity and sharing it with the world.
How do you develop your art skills?
I develop my skills through constant exploration. I love to experiment with different techniques and mediums, like acrylics, silk, pastels, photography, pottery, and more. I am always learning new things.
Describe your dream project.
My dream project would involve creating a series that blends my love for art, mysticism, and travel, perhaps drawing inspiration from mystical lands like India or the deserts I love to walk through.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
My latest works continue to explore contrasts in nature and human experience, focusing on the harmony between beauty and harshness, using vibrant colors and abstract forms to convey those themes.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
I like to let my work flow freely without defining it beforehand. The subconscious messages that arise are often a surprise to me, but they frequently revolve around contrasts and emotional depth.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
My creative process is free-flowing and intuitive. I use acrylics consistently, but I enjoy experimenting with other mediums like silk and dry pastels. I also incorporate techniques like automatic writing and collage.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
I overcome challenges by accepting the natural ebb and flow of inspiration. When I feel blocked, I often turn to spiritual practices like astrology and numerology to nourish my creativity.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
One of my favorite quotes is, “To paint with no need please. To paint and to be happy to keep it.” This resonates with my approach to creating art for its own sake.
