Interview with Agung Bule

Where are you from and how does that affect your work?
I come from a small town in Sumatra, Bangko, which is a district in the Merangin regency of Jambi Province. However, I left that small town since middle school in 2005 and moved to East Java. Briefly, I traveled across islands on a Vespa and ended up in Jogja. Before discovering art, I worked while attending college, then decided to settle in Jogja. Of course, this has had a huge influence on me as an artist.
Who are your biggest artistic influences?
Bob Sick, Stefan Buana, and Edi Sunaryo.
How do you define success as an artist?
Commitment to principles, consistency in creating art, surviving realistically, and most importantly, honesty.
How do you develop your art skills?
So far, I do it by experimenting with various techniques, mediums, materials, methods, and ultimately, returning to conventional approaches.
Describe your dream project.
One of my dreams is to own an art museum. One section would feature my own work, while another would showcase famous works from world-renowned artists. Additionally, I would regularly hold art events, both commercial and non-commercial, organize social activities, and collaborate with educational institutions across disciplines.
What is the main inspiration behind your latest artwork?
Relaxing while having coffee and smoking in the bathroom, undisturbed by anyone.
Is there a specific theme or message that you want to convey through your artwork?
Yes, the theme I want to present is DISORDER. It would take a long explanation, so I will leave the next points open.
How would you describe your creative process? Is there a special technique or medium that you use?
It's very simple. As long as I am not disturbed in the first 10-15 minutes of working, creativity comes automatically, and I don't consume alcohol. As for technique, it’s the same as other artists, though I sometimes don’t use a brush. Of course, this chapter would be too lengthy to fully explain, and there are other questions to answer.
How do you overcome challenges in creating art?
By trying to stay calm, even when a tsunami is an inch from my nose.
As an artist, what is your favorite quote?
"Problems will always come and go, but sometimes they stay overnight." —Raymond, motivator. (I’m 99.99% sure this is an honest answer, 1% exception).
